How Should Students Prepare for Final Exams?

It’s hard to believe that the school year is almost over, and our kids are in the classroom readying themselves for these final weeks. Final exams are here and the stress added to our students can be a lot to take on. As a private tutoring center in Massachusetts, we have learned about these traumatic times firsthand.

Educators across various grade-school levels spend hundreds of hours teaching these materials, creating an exam that meets specific standards, and scoring these tests that often count for around 20% of a student’s final grade. It’s hard to believe it, but even some of the hardest working students who take the time to study thoroughly for these exams still don’t do well.

In fact, many teachers end up scaling their comprehensive exams because a significant portion of their students fail. These exams are supposed to indicate the progression of long-term learning, but they rarely align with the student’s typical performance.

So, are our students learning short-term or is the information not meaningful to them?

In short, we believed these topics are being processed short-term because the information isn’t significant to them at that moment, and is only briefly relevant for that week’s test or quiz.
